Vandaag een Late Night rond Langston Hughes, een van de voornaamste exponenten van de Harlem Renaissance. De man die met zijn gedichten, verhalen en toneelstukken streed voor Afro-Amerikaanse bewustwording en emancipatie en tegen racisme en discriminatie. En daarmee ook een grote inspiratiebron was voor heel wat componisten en muzikanten, van Kurt Weill over Nina Simone tot Charles Mingus en Erik Santos.

Uitzending op Radio 6: donderdag 28 juni 2012, 23.02-01.00 uur. Een hele uitzending gewijd aan zanger en pianist Ruben Hein. Zijn debuut-album Loose Fit werd niet alleen in kringen van jazzfanaten maar vooral ook bij een jonger publiek van soul- en popliefhebbers zeer warm onthaald – getuige de nominatie voor twee 3FM-Awards, voor beste zanger en beste nieuwkomer. Ruben Hein plaatst zijn muziek zelf graag ergens op het fictieve kruispunt tussen Bill Withers, Miles Davis en Radiohead. De titel “Loose Fit” is terecht gekozen: een losse, vrije aanpak van relaxte “chill”-nummers, ook als het tempo wat hoger ligt, zijn in het oog springende kenmerken. Opmerkelijk genoeg bracht Hein eerder dit jaar een CD uit met instrumentale herinterpretaties – uitgeklede versies, noemt hij het zelf – van een aantal van de songs van zijn debuut-CD. Revisited.
